MISSION TRIP 2012 – KOKOMO, INDIANA
At a recent meeting of ACTS, the
young people decided that they will go on to road during week of June 17 to
Kokomo, Indiana on their mission trip.
Upon hearing of Kokomo, you may
immediately go to the Beach Boys tune of the same name. However Kokomo, Indiana
cannot be compared to a tropical island getaway! Kokomo, Indiana is known as
the “City of Firsts” for many achievements, but mainly for being a pioneer of
the auto industry in the US. Chrysler Group, one of the major employers in
town, recently went through bankruptcy and there was a lot of uncertainty about
the future of the company. That uncertainty took an economic and emotional toll
on the struggling community of Kokomo as they faced the reality that the
backbone of their community could crumble before their eyes – and would take
many residents down with it. Kokomo has recently been called “America’s Third
Most Dying Town” by Forbes magazine. Currently, 13% of the population lives
below the poverty level and the unemployment rate is has remained in the double
digits.
The mission trip will include such
areas as helping at soup kitchens, thrift stores, food pantries or providing a
vacation bible school experience.
This trip is open to any senior high
young person. However, we need to know no later than December 4 if you are
planning to participate.
At this time we have 8 youth who
have indicated interest in the trip. We will also be looking for adult
chaperones (so parents, if you are interested contact Pastor Dave).
In 2012, PPC’s young people are “on
the go to Kokomo.”
“ACTS” FOR OLDER YOUTH

move on to the gathering of ACTS. Or just come at 6:30 for ACTS.
Upcoming
meetings will be on Wednesday, January 4 & 18

needs to be done.
“CHRISTMAS WAS ON THE AIR” @ PPC
On December 18, the young people and adults involved in the
Educational Ministry shared a most entertaining and inspirational Christmas
program.
“Christmas: You’re On the Air” recalled the days when on-air
radio programs were popular.
News Anchors, various reporters sharing information about
traffic, weather, interviews with bystanders and reports literally from the
field. And there were sound effects.
All in all, the
program helped everyone better appreciate the Christmas story and made it come
alive in a unique way.
Over 30 people
participated in this year’s program.
A special note of
thanks to all of our teachers who helped in many ways.
Also a note of thanks to Jane Gilbertson (who provided the
tools and technical support), Teresa Ballard, Judy Taylor and Kathy Hankins for
the Jesus Birthday Cake. Again this year the cake was offered in memory of
Dorothy Henderson.

“PPC MISSION TRIPPERS” INFORMATION On Sunday June 5 nine of PPC folks headed to Green Bay for a week-long mission trip experience. Those participating in this mission trip included: Parker Roundy, Samantha Ballard, Samantha Harvey, Lindsey Harvey, Allison Foster and Sarah Hankins. Adults participating were Mary Roundy, Walt Harvey and Pastor Dave. While this mission trip experience was unique in that ours was the only group in Green Bay during this week, we still had a fantastic time and were truly the “hands and feet of Jesus” in that community. Watch upcoming bulletins and newsletters for more info on the “stockholder’s dinner” where you will have an opportunity to hear and experience more about this mission trip. Thanks again to all who supported these “mission trippers” through prayers, words of encouragement and financial support.

WE RAN AWAY & JOINED THE CIRCUS Ladies and Gentlemen, children of all ages On Tuesday, July 27 10 young people and 7 adults who had participated in the “Portage Church Day Camp 2010” this summer were given an opportunity to “run away and join the circus.” Okay, not really! However, we did spend the day at the Circus World Museum in Baraboo. Arriving early on a typical summer day, we were able to enjoy many different opportunities before it became too warm. Our day started with the “Kids Interactive Circus” with our own Elizabeth Martens playing the role of an elephant. She was the star of the show. Then we made our way across the river to the “Tiger Adventure Show.” The trainer led the tigers through a variety of jumps and acts. We even heard a tiger’s “growl” and saw a tiger’s “teeth” as one of the cats decided they were not too happy doing what they were supposed to do. Among the tigers were two “white tigers.” As the day progressed, we all practiced our “growls.” Then came the “Big Top Circus Performance.” This was a fantastic show of juggling, elephant acts, dog acts, balancing, twisting on a rope suspended over the arena among other things. Oohs and aahs were commonly heard throughout the performance. And of course the performance was extra-special because the “ringmaster” (David SaLoutos) is a Presbyterian (from the First Church in Baraboo). Lunch was “the infamous bag lunch” and then it was on to a “magic show.” We are still trying to figure out how he did what he did! When asked what part of the day they liked the best, some thought about the tigers. Others were thinking about the jugglers or the elephants. But, in the end, all agreed that the best part of the day was “everything.” What a great way to close our “Portage Church Day Camp 2010” ministry for the summer. A very special “thank you” to our “anonymous donor” who made this day possible.
EDUCATION MINISTRY UPDATE Come and check out the good things that are happening here at PPC. Our “birth-3 year old” class continues to meet on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. This class has been gathering in the “nursery area” above Parry Hall. Liz Bellmore and Donna Mohr are the teachers for this class. Elementary age youth has 2 opportunities to participate in PPC’s educational ministry. Sunday morning classes continue to meet at 9:30 a.m. in Westminster Center. Our “one-room Sunday School” experience is being taught by Lee and Mary Roundy. On Wednesdays we have three “Wednesday evening” classes - one for elementary age young people (now taught by Mackenzie Bornick and Nick Hankins); one for our “Pre-Confirmation” group (grades 6 & 7) taught by Lee Roundy; and one for older youth and adults (led by Pastor Dave) in Parry Hall. If you have questions, please contact Kathy Hankins at 742-2752 or dknshankins@verizon.net
